Alpha and Omega, ad infinitum

How does one begin a story? In particular their story? There are many famous novel beginnings. “Call me Ishmael.” and “When he was nearly thirteen, my brother Jem got his arm badly broken at the elbow.” are a couple. Maybe more fitting a personal tale, would be “In my younger and more vulnerable years my father gave me some advice that I’ve been turning over in my mind ever since.”

The more I thought about my first real post here I realized that we have no bright-line beginnings.

One possible beginning is a book that started on Oct 6th, 1970. But my beginning isn’t there either because my parents wrote the first several chapters and they had simply expanded their own books. Books that their parents had been writing in and I was simply the next volume.

Then I started wondering about the end of my book and I came to see that we don’t ever end our books because our whole lives we are adding notes and comments to the books of every one we interact with before we hand ours on directly to our children. We start our story a faint penciling and then go on forever in some sense whether we fade back into the shadows or leave indelible marks.

So, I suppose this was my wordy way of saying I don’t know where this story begins or ends. There are multiple protagonists, antagonists, and story arcs that the influence of which may not be known until I have the benefit of hindsight.

As for how this story begins? It begins, “How does one begin their story?”
